Last day to sign up for wildlife incentive program

 

Today is the last day for farmers and landowners in Cross and Poinsett counties to submit an application for the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP).

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, more than $170,000 is available to help landowners install conservation practices through WHIP.

Village Creek State Park in Wynne will hold a Star Party from 7:30 until 8:30 tonight.

The evening will begin with a presentation on astronomy by the park interpreters and the Memphis Astronomical Society.

Afterward, you'll head out to the horse trail parking area to observe the stars through the society's telescopes.

Bring along your telescope and binoculars along with a chair and a bottle of water for an enjoyable night of stargazing.

Admission is free.

USDA accepting applications for water conservation funding

 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is now accepting applications for 10 Arkansas projects, including several in Cross County.

According to the USDA, the main focus for all of the projects is to improve water quality and quantity.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said, "The funding will help producers implement a system of conservation practices that will control soil erosion, improve soil quality and provide wildlife habitat."

Turkey hunters urged to speak out

Turkey hunters urged to speak out

If you're a turkey hunter, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wants to hear from you.

On Tuesday, August 23, it will host several public meetings throughout the state including Jonesboro.  The meetings will begin at 7 p.m.

The purpose of the meetins is for hunters to gather information and ask questions on the proposed turkey hunting regulations for 2012.
