New phone scam making the rounds | Crime
If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the federal government offering you thousands of dollars, hang up the phone.
Cross County Sheriff J.R. Smith says his office has received “several reports” of an individual presenting themselves as being with the National Federal Grant Program. The caller is offering $9,000 just for your having good credit.
The scam artist, who has been described as having a thick accent, is calling land lines as well as cell phones the sheriff said.
In addition to asking for checking account numbers, the caller is also asking for savings account numbers and debit card numbers.
Sheriff Smith says the calls are originating from the telephone number (202) 210-0054 DC USA.
He urges citizens to not give any information to this person.
Residents throughout Your Region 8, including Craighead and Jackson Counties, report receiving the phone calls.
