Memorial Day weekend events open to the public

 

Memorial Day weekend is May 25 through 28.  To mark the occasion, South Wind Heights of Jonesboro has planned several events and they’re all free to the public.

On Friday, May 25, it will host a backyard BBQ at noon.  An educational seminar about VA benefits available to veterans and their surviving spouses will be held Saturday, May 26, at 10 a.m.  On Sunday, May 27, there will be an open house with refreshments at 10 a.m.  A Memorial Day celebration with dinner and entertainment will be held at noon on Monday, May 28.

Stamp Out Hunger this Saturday

Stamp Out Hunger this Saturday

 

This Saturday the U.S. Postal Service will do more than just deliver mail.

Letter carriers will also be picking up food.

The 20th Annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign is the nation’s largest single-day food drive.

It’s easy to participate.  Just leave a bag of non-perishable food items like soup, canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, cereal or rice, near your mailbox.   Your letter carrier will do the rest.

Donations collected will be deliver to your local food bank and other hunger relief organizations.

Sen. Pryor's mobile office to stop in Harrisburg

Have questions or concerns about Medicare, Social Security, VA benefits or other federal services?

Senator Mark Pryor's staff wants to help you.

His mobile office will be making the rounds throughout Your Region 8 next week, including a stop in Cross County.

The mobile office will be at the Cross County Courthouse, 705 East Union St. in Wynne, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 16.

No appointment is necessary.

Unfortunately, they're not all getting the recognition they deserve.

But, you can help shine the spotlight on them!

Gov. Beebe to speak at veterans' cemetery dedication

 

You're invited to attend a dedication ceremony for the new Arkansas State Veterans' Cemetery will be held Friday, May 4, at 1 p.m. in Birdeye.

Governor Mike Beebe will deliver the keynote address.

The cemetery, which is located at 3600 Highway 163, will be the final resting place for veterans, their spouses and dependents.

It is the second veterans cemetery operated by the state.  The other is located in North Little Rock.

Photo contest now accepting submissions

 

The Cross County Arts Council is now accepting submissions for the 2012 Cross County Photo Contest.

To be eligible, the photographs must have been taken between May 1, 2011 and May 1, 2012.

The photos can be of people, places or things.  But they all must be in Cross County, even if the photographer does not live there.
