Park promises hands-on fun for students

 

Pottery making, native weapons, storytelling, mound building!

Those are some of the things students will learn about and participate in during the upcoming “Casqui School Days” at Parkin Acheological State Park.

Casqui was the name of the ancient village of Parkin, as well as the name of its chief at the time Hernando de Soto came through the area.

On Thursday andFriday, November 8-9, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. students will receive hands-on learning about American Indian life at Casqui.

Have you ever wondered how the Native Americans created their beautiful pottery?

The people at Parkin Archeological State Park invite you to get a hands-on explanation.

On Saturday, October 20, they will host a pottery workshop.

Participants will be able to replicate an ancient vessel or create a new shape from their imagination.

Whatever you create will be fired in an open fire pit.

There is a $25 fee for materials.  Because space is limited, reservations are required.  To reserve a spot, call (870) 755-2500.

Single-event tickets for all three shows in the ASU-Newport 2012-13 Patron Series lineup are now on sale at the ASUN business office. 

Fiddler on the Roof will get the patron series underway November 10, followed by a December 7 performance by The Hunts.  Academy Award-winner B.J. Thomas will take the stage February 23.  Showtimes for all three performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. at the ASUN Center for the Arts.

Parkin State Park to offer kids a step back in time

Time is running out to reserve your spot for the annual Homeschool Sawmill Days at Parkin Archeological State Park.

On Thursday and Friday, October 11 and 12, homeschooled children will get an opportunity to see what life was like from 1900 to 1948 when the Northern Ohio Mill was in operation.

Participants will see what life was like working at the mill and living in the community.

The program is open to all homeschoolers, but is designed for children seven and up.

The cost is $2 per child, parents are welcome free of charge.

Classical guitarist to perform at ASU

Classical guitarist to perform at ASU

Classical guitarist, Vladmir Gorbach, will perform Tueday, October 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, 2412 Quapaw Way, at Arkansas State University.

It is the second event in the 2012-13 Lecture Concert Series.  Admission is free.

According to a news release from ASU, Gorbach grew up in Siberia, Russia, where he graduated with honors from the Music College of Novosibirsk.  He has won 10 first-place prizes in international competitions, including the 2011 Guitar Foundation of America International Competition.

Depot Days set to roll into Newport

There will be a whole lot of rocking and rolling going on when Depot Days rolls into downtown Newport on Saturday, September 29.

The annual event pays tribute to the “rich musical history of Jackson County” and Rock n’ Roll Highway 67, when such stars as Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley kept the highway hot traveling from one venue to another in their quests to become international superstars.
