Searching for past Region 8 Stars

Searching for past Region 8 Stars

Monday July 15, 1963, was pretty much like any other day in Your Region 8.

The sun had burned off a morning fog, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, lifting the temperature to a toasty 88 degrees.

Cardinals fans were probably feeling a little hot under the collar after Lou Brock and the Chicago Cubs shut out St. Louis, 2-0. A year later Brock would be playing for the “right team.”

Aside from Paul McCartney being fined 17 British pounds for speeding through his hometown of Liverpool, not much else was happening around the rest of the world.

'Miracle on the Hudson' survivor to share his story

On January 15, 2009, U.S. Airways Flight 1549 landed in New York’s Hudson River.

Dave Sanderson risked his own life to help passengers get off the plane.

He was the last to leave.

On Thursday, June 6, he will be the featured speaker at the Hero Celebration Luncheon hosted by the American Red Cross of Northeast Arkansas.

In addtion to Sanderson, the luncheon will celebrate true lifesvaing heroes in our community.

Stamp Out Hunger on May 11

Stamp Out Hunger on May 11

On Saturday, May 11, you have a chance to stamp out hunger.

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive that day.

All you will need to do is set a bag of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your regular mail deliver.

The postal workers will do the rest.

Food collected during the drive will benefit the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, which provides emergency food assistance to 5,100 people each week.

Region 8 Responds: Letters to the Editor

The following letter was submitted by Superintendent Mitch Walton, Sloan-Hendrix School District:

Sloan-Hendrix has had individuals to speak at graduation in the past. Contrary to what has been said, no invitation was extended this year to anyone. As superintendent, I have the authority to decide about who the speaker will be or whether we have a speaker at all. The school board does not vote on speakers for graduation.
