Kum & Go raising money for tornado victims

Kum & Go is joining the American Red Cross disaster relief effort in Oklahoma.

Now through Friday, May 31, customers will have the opportunity to add $1 to each purchase they make.

Every dollar donated will go directly to the Red Cross for relief efforts.

Kum & Go has more than 400 stores in 11 states, including several here in Your Region 8.

Level 3 sex offender now living in Cherry Valley

The Cross County Sheriff’s Office reported this week a Level 3 sex offender is now living in Cherry Valley.

Scotty Deon Vest, 43, is currently living in the 3800-block of Highway 364.

According to an email from the sheriff’s office, Vest was convicted of sexual indecency with a minor.

A Level 3 sex offenders are considered a high risk to re-offend.

The Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer.  And that means trips to local rivers, lakes and swimming pools.

Before you hit the water for fun in the sun, the Arkansas Department of Health offers these steps to avoid recreational water illnesses (RWIs).

RWIs can cause a wide variety of problems, including gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic and wound infections.

The most commonly reported RWI is diarrhea, which can be caused by germs like cryptosporidium, norovirus and E. coli.

Wynne Opera House added to "most endangered" list

Many people probably don’t know the city of Wynne once had a “thriving” opera house.

What’s more, many also don’t know it’s one of Arkansas’s most endangered places.

Thursday in Little Rock, the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas announced its list of endangered places.  The list highlights historically and architecturally significant properties

The list includes two antebellum homes, a school, an orphanage, a service station shaped like an oil can and the Wynne Opera House, located at 218 S. Front St. in Wynne.

Deadline to apply for Century Farm status fast approaching

 

Time is running out for your family to make history.

The Arkansas Agriculture Department is accepting applications for the 2013 Arkansas Century Farm program.

To be eligible for the designation, applications must be postmarked no later than May 31.

The program recognizes Arkansas’s agricultural heritage and honors families who have owned and farmed the same land for at least 100 years.

In 2012, the first year of the program, 83 farms were certified.
