Learn about life on the river at upcoming event in Parkin

The St. Francis River has been an important part of the history at Parkin Archeological State Park and eastern Arkansas.

On Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the public is invited to the park’s first St. Francis River Day event.

From small canoes to large steamboats, the river has long been used as a means of transportation. A replica 40 foot keelboat will be on hand to show how many of the early settlers first came to the region.

This year’s St. Bernards Medical Group Health & Fitness Expo will offer a variety of ideas for cooking healthy and eating right.

There will be different demonstrations going on in the Expo’s Healthy Cooking Kitchen, a facility assembled especially for Expo by Gilmore’s Custom Kitchens. Eight different demos will be held during the three-day event, with the featured cooks focusing on foods that are healthy, easy to prepare, kid-friendly and “better choices” that provide energy without excess calories.

Cell phone found after 9 months in lake...and it still works!

Just before Independence Day last year Kathy Smotherman of Paragould got a new iPhone 4S.

She decked it out in a Razorback cover then headed for Lake Wappapello in Southeast Missouri where she and her family celebrated the holiday on their pontoon boat.

Kathy used her new phone to take photos of the fun and good times.

But, when the day came to an end, those good times sank like a stone in the bottom of a lake.

The phone was missing.

During a phone conversation with Your Region 8, Kathy said they “tore that pontoon apart.”

Tornado safety tips

As of 10 o'clock Thursday morning, all of Your Region 8 was under a Tornado Watch.

Meteorologist Bryan McCormick says we should expect a strong line of thunderstorms to roll through Region 8 "shortly before noon and last through the afternoon."

He says the main threats are strong winds, dangerous lightning and large hail. Isolated, strong tornadoes are also a possibility.

According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK, “there is no such thing as guaranteed safety inside a tornado.”

However, tornadoes can be survived by following these safety tips:

Public invited to answer "A Call to Honor"

New York Times bestselling author Acton Bowen, Buddy Mullins of the Gaither vocal band "Testify" and William "Chris" Shelton invite you to answer “A Call to Honor.”

The event will be held Saturday, April 20, at 6 p.m. at the Paragould Community Center.

Shelton, who is the founder of Reach Out Christ’s Kingdom (R.O.C.K.) Ministries in Piggott and the event organizer, describes it as an “inter-denominational, bipartisan call to a higher standard for our youth, men, women, business, political and religious leaders.”
